Freelance Grant Writers
Anyone done an access to HE before taking a degree?
hi guys.
i'm 35 and thinking about going back into learning now that my children are older, and so i've been looking online at the best way to do this.
it seems as though doing an access course is the best way seeing as it is nearly 20 years since i was last at school lol.
i'm interested in doing an english degree as i love reading/writing, and used to be a freelance writer for a few magazines.
it will have to be part-time though as i work part-time and can't afford to live on a student grant - my partner is at uni so i know how little he gets :(
has anyone found that an access course helped to prepare them for uni?
my level 3 choices at the moment, based on what i've researched are either psychology or humanities with social science - the only local english access course i've found is a level 2 and of no real use to me.
if anyone has experience to share, then i will very very grateful!
xxx
I'm just coming to the end of my access course and I start uni in Sept. I'm 34 and like you have gone back to learning now my children are older. Although I haven't started yet I feel so much more prepared for uni than if I hadn't done the access. Just the essay writing skills and referencing that has been drummed into me have made the course worthwhile. I'm going into nursing & I have lots of friends who have already started at uni. Those who didn't do the access course have said that those who did seem much more prepared for the level of academic work expected.
I also feel I've changed a lot as a person doing the course. I've regained my personality and grown in confidence. I've also made some great new friends. So all in all I feel it's been a positive experience all round.
My course is 3 full days a week, 9.15am till 3.15pm so most of have part-time jobs alongside.
Good luck and I hope you can find something to suit you.
What Is A Grant Writer?
If you are perusing freelance writing jobs you will often come across requests for a Grant Writer. This obscure term is not so obscure when you begin to understand what a grant writer is, and what they do. Grant writers, in fact, can earn very decent money writing their requested items, so let’s look in simple terms at what a grant writer does.
Put simply, a grant writer is a specialist writer who concentrates on writing applications for grants for organisations, government bodies and more. The specialisation comes in the form of the research involved, for to apply successfully the grant writer must display a full understanding of many aspects of the process.
First, the grant writer needs to understand the business that the organisation applying for the grant is involved in. This may involve a great deal of research and investigation and the skills of a grant writer extend into this area considerably.
Furthermore, the grant writer needs to have a thorough knowledge of the application process, and this can vary between the organisations that are providing the grants. Being able to analyse what is required and follow the requested guidelines and formats is essential to the skills of the grant writer.
A grant writer needs impressive command of English and grammar, and must be able to put across a concise and correct application that is easily understood by the grantor. He or she must also have a good understanding of budgets and financial matters, and the combined skills of research, writing and monetary matters mean grant writers can command considerable fees.
Grant writers are very often freelance, and work to a fee that they agree with the body applying for the grant. It is up to the grant writer to co-ordinate all aspects of the application from the written aspect to the liaison with the grantor following the application, and again this is an area that requires many skills – particularly those of communication and deadline management.
In brief, then, a grant writer should be someone who is patient, has great attention to detail, a good command of English, an understanding of budgetary matters and is a good communicator.
It may sound a lot to ask but many of these attributes go hand in hand with each other, and the lucrative life of a grant writer is one that many freelance writers consider.
