Pet Business Opportunities

Pet Business Opportunities
Where can I find resources to promote my pet care business?

I own and operate a pet sitting and dog walking business. I'd like to prepare home made dog treats in gift bags to give to pet owners. However, I don't know where to start. I can't prepare food for the life of me so I'm not sure how I'm going to pull off making dog treats. Do you know a good resource for easy dog treat recipes? Also, where can I find decorative (dog relevant) plastic wrap or gift bags to put the treats in?

Do you have any other creative ideas that I could use to promote my business? In other words, is there some other product that i could obtain at an affordable or low cost (because it will be in bulk) to distribute to pet owners?

I plan on giving the gifts to people in person and using it as an opportunity to introduce myself and my business. I plan to include a business card and possbily a coupon.

I'm going to break down your questions and answer each separately.
1. You can get help with techniques for marketing your business from your local chamber of commerce or small business development center. The most inexpensive and effective method of promoting your business is word of mouth. Treat your current customers right and they'll tell their friends. Also, work on building a network. Go where dogs and dog owners go. Make a brochure (you can do this for pennies on your computer and make copies at Kinko) and ask local vets and pet food stores if you can leave them there. Also consider visiting adult living centers. Many seniors have animals and may have difficulty walking them.
2. The gift idea is good but if you're not comfortable making pet treats, don't. The LAST thing you want is a sick pet on your hands and little to say about it. Maybe you can do something else like make "Fido Cards". Take a digital picture of the dog (maybe in some cool pose or costume or something) and turn it into a card. Again, easy to do on a computer and you can get great layout ideas on the internet or any card store. If you're really stuck on giving pet treats, buy a large bag at Sams Club and put a few in a gift bag along with a pet toy (from the Dollar Tree). Make the gift bags personal and even use the dog's picture on an adhesive label to seal it.
3. Business cards and coupons can be made at home relatively cheaply. Officemax and Office Depot have tons of paper for both. Vistaprint.com will print you business cards for free.
4. A great way to promote your business and start networking is to volunteer at an animal shelter. You'll get to meet the people who work there and they will be your best marketers. You'll also get to meet the people who turn animals in and adopt animals. People tend to prefer the services of those who they're already familiar with so you would be building a client base for just a few hours of volunteering a week. And lastly, you'll be able to learn some new dog control techniques.

Good luck.
