Living and working in Toronto, Canada.?
Hello,
I will be moving to Toronto, Canada with my husband during the summer. He was born in Canada and left when he was a teen. I'm originally from the UK, so we both speak English fluently. My husband works as a computer technician for a computer company. He actually manages the IT department. I myself have done numerous jobs, however I don't have a degree. I have worked as a Veterinary Assistant, Receptionst, Office Administrator, Sales, etc. I would like to know what kind of wages we should expect in this line of work? Would we be able to live comfortably with us both working? We're not the kind of people that drive luxury cars and fine dine every night. Would it be possible to give me a quick run down of the expenses of living in Canada? For example, taxes deducted from our income, electricity, gas, rent (or mortgage for an average 3 bedroom house) We're looking at living in Pickering, Ajax, or surrounding areas... (safe areas) etc.
Any feedback would be most appreciated.
I live in Toronto - downtown area, 5 bedroom, 100 year old house (not very energy efficient).
Mortgage rates depend on the length of the term and are now about 5.75 to 6.5%. www.mls.ca will let you check out some houses in the areas you are interested in and then with a mortgage calculator you can estimate your costs. All the major banks have web sites where you can check rates try Bank of Montreal or Canada Trust. (but don't accept the posted rate - you can do a little better)
Our house is expensive to heat, $300 in a cold month and that includes hot water. Our electricity cost is about $100 per month and water and sewer runs about $700 per year, our house insurance is about $600 per year.
Gasoline is about $1.00 per liter. I spend about $120 per week on food (doesn't include weekday lunches) we eat well (but I cook well) and are a family of 4 adults. Our car insurance is about $110 per month, telephone and internet $130.
I really can't tell you much about salaries as I'm a realtor and earn by commission, but I would guess your husband would be earn at least 50,000 and you at least 30,000. And yes I think you can live quite comfortably on that in the Toronto area.
I think most areas are safe. I certainly don't worry about walking about at night, The only crime we've been subjected to in the last 10 years was someone stealing the parking change out of our car when I left it unlocked.
I think it is a great area to live, come on over.
