Which Linux distro is for me?
I'm a web deisgner and a media artist (graphic design, animation and sound design)
I've used linux before, but i couldnt cope with using anything but the most professional and top grade software.
Is there any way i can use a linux distro (because i do love the os) and still use my windows software? I know there's virutalbox but I dont ahve a winxp or winvista disk on hand
If you wish to use a Linux distribution as well as keep your XP etc installation, then you can use virtualisation software. The choices are:
Microsoft Virtual PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/virtualpc/default.mspx), and
VMWare, (http://www.vmware.com/products/server/)
both free.
Once installed, you can then install the Linux distro to a virtual server on your PC, which will keep it separate from your XP setup, and self contained. It runs in its own memory space, and can be customised and changed according to your needs.
The other alternative is to repartition your hard disk, to make room for some Linux partitions, ext3/reiser, swap etc. The virtualisation method is much easier, and means you do not have to repartition.
all the best
