Ideas/Advice for small-business based on Copyrighted idea?
I would like to start a small (home-based) business custom-building models/replicas based on a character from a popular TV series. Can anyone recommend the proper procedures required that would ensure that ALL copyrights are respected? Do I contact the studio involved in making the series to get their permission? Should I hire an attorney for this?
ANY info or advice would be greatly appreciated!
(p.s. I plan to offer my custom-made models within a specially-designed glass case. Can anyone ALSO recommend a company I can contact to build these cases for me??)
You need to contact the producers of the TV series, named in the credits. It is likely the rights have already been licensed. If the figure and the show is incidental to the creativity in the model, like you want to show Fonzie (to reach back in history) in what you would design as a room for him, not what is shown on the show, then it becomes more possible.
If the show is based on a previously copyright protected image (i.e. Smalltown > Superboy > Superman) life gets more exciting.
Glass cases are best gotten through showroom and store supply places - Store Decor. Since a glass case will be heavier than almost anything you might model and cost a bunch, you might look at rigid plastic cases and bases.
